SALT Launches Rental Assistance Program for current SALT Tenants

TUCSON, AZ (October 10, 2024): With the generous assistance of grants from the Wells Fargo Foundation ($25,000) and Washington Federal (WaFd) Foundation ($5,000), SALT has launched a Tenant Rental Assistance Program. The entirety of the grant funding will be allocated toward assisting existing SALT tenant households.

“SALT is very excited and honored to partner with the Wells Fargo Foundation to provide rental assistance to families that are struggling during these difficult economic times,” said Gregg Sasse, Executive Director at SALT. “This generous grant allows SALT to further our mission of providing safe and affordable quality housing to deserving households in Southern Arizona.”

The SALT Tenant Rental Assistance Program will assist households at or below 80% Average Median Income (AMI) who are at risk of housing instability. Priority will be given to older adults over the age of 60, families with children, persons with disabilities, and veterans. The program will begin effective immediately and run through August of 2025.

In 2024, Tucson households continue to struggle with the increasing cost of basic living expenses including housing and fluctuating inflation while income levels have not kept pace. The need for assistance for families who rent has amplified due to the end of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds which previously helped numerous Tucson families during the height of the COVID pandemic between 2020-2023.

Rental assistance programs have been proven to be incredibly effective at reducing hardship for families. These programs have worked to sharply reduce poverty and homelessness by providing individuals and families with a lifeline when facing unexpected hardship and economic distress.

As one of the largest providers of affordable single family rental homes in Pima County, SALT has a strong reputation and track record of providing safe, reliable, well-maintained affordable housing. The availability of rental assistance funding from the Wells Fargo Foundation and Washington Federal Foundation will allow SALT to further extend its ability to assist low-income families during times of extreme challenge and critical need.
